Our servicemen and servicewomen who serve overseas today can often hear their hometown radio stations over the Intenet. But for us older folks, local AFN radio affiliates were often our only English language options. With the end of the cold war, many of those stations closed down. It was at this time that there was an outpouring of thanks from the many citizens of the host country where the US had bases who used to also listen to these stations. This is an aircheck of a local public radio station that re-broadcast the closedown of a AFN station. Translation of the local broadcaster's comments: "Many thanks for many years of radio entertainment from us here in Bremen and Bremerhaven to our colleagues over at AFN. Its time for me to leave, my dear listeners. This was the Morning in Bremen show, and I hope that we can be here for you for a long, long time. Bye for now."
