Description: In 1968, Tommy James and the Shondells needed a title for a song they were going to record. As Tommy James tells it, they could see the building housing the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York from their window. It was commonly called MONY. That is where they took the title from! There were a number of MONYsigns at the top of the building since 1950, but the one in these pictures was the last one. MONY merged with AXA Financial in 2004, and moved out of the building. The sign at the top of the building now just says '1740'. Nothing to connect it to the worldwide smash hit anymore. Photos taken April 24, 2002.
